Can I Take Amoxicillin If I’M Allergic to Penicillin?

You should not take amoxicillin if you are allergic to penicillin. Both drugs are from the same class of antibiotics, the cephalosporins. Amoxicillin is used for many bacterial infections including those of the ears, nose, and throat, respiratory tract, urinary tract, gonorrhea, and skin infections. H. pylori bacteria, a cause of stomach ulcers, is usually treated with amoxicillin. Macrolides such as erythromycin and azithromycin; vancomycin, and batrim can be used as alternatives to the cephalosporin antibiotics.
